Water Spotting, Plains Dust And Treeless New Estates

Out here the paint problem is rarely sap. It is mineral spotting and a sun that nothing blocks.

The Wyndham environment

Werribee sits in the City of Wyndham on the volcanic basalt plains west of Melbourne, and everything about the local paint problem follows from that geography. The plains are flat, open and windy. The newer estates spreading out around the suburb have young street trees that provide almost no canopy, so cars sit fully exposed. The defining issue, though, is water. Melbourne's mains supply from the eastern catchments is notably soft, but this side of the city is supplied differently and the water is harder. What actually helps

A ceramic coating helps with water spotting in a specific, mechanical way: it makes the surface strongly hydrophobic, so most water sheets off the panel rather than sitting on it as droplets. Less water left on the paint means less dissolved mineral left behind when it evaporates. It also gives any spots that do form something hard to sit on, so they wipe away instead of etching.

It does not make the car spot-proof. If you let bore water dry on a black bonnet at 38 degrees repeatedly, you will eventually get marks even on a coating. The honest advice is: coat the car, and also move the sprinklers.

The water goes, the dissolved calcium and magnesium stay, and on a surface above about 40 degrees they can etch a ring into clear coat within hours. Fresh spots wash off. Etched ones need machine polishing to remove, which is why prevention matters here.
