Ceramic Coating

Ceramic Paint Coating, Applied The Slow Way

A hard, hydrophobic layer bonded to your clear coat — after the paint underneath has been made straight.

What you are actually buying

A ceramic coating is a liquid polymer sealant that bonds to the painted surface and cures into a hard, glass-like film. Once cured it behaves like an additional clear coat with three useful properties: it is superhydrophobic, so water beads and runs off carrying dirt with it; it is chemically resistant, so acidic contamination has to eat through the coating before it touches your paint; and it holds gloss without the waxing and polishing cycle that a sealant demands.

Applied properly, that translates into real-world outcomes you can measure. Bird droppings that would have etched a permanent ring into clear coat wipe off if you get to them within a day. The car stays clean longer between washes because dust does not key into the surface. Metallic and solid dark colours keep their depth instead of going chalky after three Melbourne summers. And when you sell, the paint presents as a car that has been looked after, which is not nothing.

What it will not do

This is where the industry gets loose, so we will be blunt. A ceramic coating will not stop stone chips. It is measured in microns; a stone flung off a truck on the Western Ring Road carries far more energy than a few microns of resin can absorb. It will not stop scratches in any meaningful sense — it resists the fine marring that washing causes, but a trolley, a key, a branch or a dog's claws will go straight through it into the paint. It will not stop hail dents, because dents are a metal problem not a surface problem. And it does not make the car self-cleaning; it makes it easier to clean, which is a different claim.

If chips are your problem, the answer is paint protection film on the strike zone, not a thicker coating.

Why preparation is most of the cost

The coating chemical is a small line item. What you are paying for is the hours before it. The car is washed, then chemically decontaminated for iron fallout and tar, then clayed to pull embedded particles out of the clear coat. Then it is inspected under lighting that shows defects a driveway never will. Then comes paint correction — one or two machine stages to level swirls and holograms. Then every panel is wiped down with a solvent to strip polishing oils, because oils left behind stop the coating bonding and you get high spots and early failure.

Only then does the coating go on, panel by panel, in thin layers with flash and cure time between them. Skipping any of that is how a cheap coating job ends up looking worse in a year than no coating at all — because whatever was wrong with the paint is now sealed under something hard.

Realistic durability

Expect two to five years from a professionally applied coating. Products such as Gtechniq Crystal Serum Ultra are rated by their manufacturer for up to five years, and that figure assumes a garaged car washed correctly. A car that lives on the street in Richmond under plane trees, washed at a brush car wash, will be visibly tired well before that. Storage and wash method matter more than the brand on the bottle.

Coverage options run from exterior paint only, to complete exterior including alloy wheels and glass, through to full protection with the interior done as well. The cost guide sets out what changes between them, and the service areas page shows where we travel.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

What does a ceramic coating protect against?

Chemical and environmental attack. Bird droppings, decomposing insects, tree sap, industrial fallout, road grime, hard water and UV all have to get through the coating before they reach your clear coat. It also resists the light marring a wash mitt causes. It offers no protection against impact damage of any kind.

Is waxing necessary after a ceramic coating?

No. Wax sits on top and lasts weeks; the coating is bonded and lasts years, so waxing over it adds nothing and can actually mask the hydrophobic behaviour you paid for. What the coating does need is a periodic maintenance wash with a pH-neutral shampoo and, every six to twelve months, a coating-specific topper if you want peak beading.

Can a ceramic coating be removed if I do not like it?

Yes, by machine polishing it off, which removes a little clear coat with it. That is not a disaster on a healthy factory finish but it is not free either, and it is one more reason to be sure about the product before it goes on. Coatings cannot be stripped chemically the way a wax or sealant can.

How soon after a respray can the car be coated?

Wait until the fresh paint has fully gassed off, which for most refinish systems means at least four to six weeks and sometimes longer. Coating too early traps solvent in the film and you can end up with a soft, hazy finish. Ask the panel shop what their system requires and give it the full window.
