The Bayside environment
Brighton sits in the City of Bayside on the eastern shore of Port Phillip, and the thing that defines it for paint is the onshore wind. Sea breezes carry salt aerosol well inland — it does not stop at the foreshore — so cars parked anywhere between Beach Road and Hampton Street are collecting a chloride film daily. You cannot see it. You can feel it, as a faint gritty slickness on the glass, and you can watch what it does over a few years to unprotected alloy wheels and to any panel with a chip in it.
The second local factor is sand. Between Dendy Street Beach and Middle Brighton, fine quartz sand blows across the streets and settles into door shuts, mirror housings, the base of the windscreen and the rocker panels. Sand is harder than clear coat. Every wash that does not begin with a thorough pressure rinse grinds some of it in.
The third is tree litter of a particular kind. Brighton's street planting includes a lot of coastal tea-tree, eucalypts and mature exotics, and the bark, gum and seed drop from them sits on cars in a way that holds moisture. On a car parked in the open, that combination — moisture, salt and organic debris — is the whole problem in one place.
Why coating suits bayside cars
A ceramic coating is a barrier layer and a slick one, which is exactly the right tool here. Salt film cannot key into it, so a rinse shifts most of it. Sand is far less likely to embed. And the hydrophobic behaviour means the car sheets water and dries faster, which shortens the window in which chloride and moisture are in contact with the surface.
Wheels deserve specific mention. Alloy wheels in Brighton corrode at the barrels and around kerb rash, because that is where the factory finish is already broken and salt collects. What it will not fix
It will not stop existing corrosion. If a stone chip on your bonnet has already gone through to primer and started lifting, coating over it seals the problem in. Those need touching up first. It will not stop the fine sand scratches you have already put in the paint — that is what paint correction is for, and Brighton cars very often need a stage of it before anything goes on top. And it does not stop the chips themselves; Beach Road and Nepean Highway will keep throwing stones, and paint protection film is the only defence against those.

Does salt air really damage car paint in Brighton?
It damages the things around the paint first. Salt aerosol settles as a fine chloride film that holds moisture against surfaces, which accelerates corrosion at any point where the coating system is already broken — stone chips, kerbed wheel rims, badge edges and window trims. Healthy paint tolerates it; paint with existing chips does not.
How often should I wash a car parked near the beach?
Fortnightly at minimum through summer, and more often if the car sits within a few hundred metres of the foreshore. The point is rinsing chloride off before it has weeks to sit. A coated car makes this quick, because a rinse and a soft wash removes salt film that would otherwise need contact scrubbing on bare clear coat.
Is sand scratching my paint when I wash it?
Very likely, yes. Blown sand off Dendy Street Beach settles in door shuts, around mirror bases and along the rocker panels. If you wash with a mitt without pre-rinsing thoroughly, you drag quartz across the clear coat. Pressure rinse first, always, and keep a separate mitt for the lower third of the car.
