Garaged, Low-Kilometre Cars Have Their Own Problems

A car that does 4,000km a year and lives in a garage is not automatically a car with healthy paint.

Stonnington's particular mix

Toorak sits in the City of Stonnington, and it presents a different set of problems to a street-parked inner-north daily. The housing stock has garages, often several. The cars are frequently newer, frequently dark, and frequently driven far less than average. On paper that is ideal. In practice it produces its own failure modes.

The first is dry wiping. A car that sits in a garage for three weeks develops a layer of settled dust. The temptation is to run a quick detailer and a microfibre over it before driving out. On bare clear coat that is abrasion, and repeated over years it produces the fine haze that only shows in direct sun on Toorak Road. This is the most common defect we find on low-kilometre Stonnington cars.

The second is the trees. Toorak's streets and the avenues around Grange Road and Kooyong Road carry mature elms and London planes. Elm leaf beetle activity and aphid honeydew combine with sooty mould to produce a sticky, speckled film that lands on anything parked under them, including cars pulled out of the garage for a day. It etches if it is left to bake.

The third is basement parking. Cars kept under apartment buildings and at Toorak Village pick up concrete dust and, in older buildings, rust-coloured drip staining from the slab above. Both are abrasive or acidic and neither responds to a simple wash.

What we usually recommend here

For a well-kept, low-kilometre car, a single-stage paint correction followed by a full exterior ceramic coating is normally the right call. The correction is short because the defects are light, and the coating means the next few years of dust wiping and honeydew is dealt with on a slick, replaceable surface rather than on the factory finish.

Interior protection is more relevant here than in most suburbs, because light-coloured leather is common and dye transfer from denim is the complaint we hear most. So is wheel coating, since large-diameter gloss wheels show brake dust instantly and are painful to clean by hand.

What we will not claim

We will not tell you a coating makes a car scratch-proof. It does not. A gravel driveway, a hedge branch, a careless valet or a shopping trolley at Toorak Village will all mark the paint straight through it. We will not tell you it stops hail — Melbourne hailstorms dent metal and only cover prevents that. And we will not sell a full two-stage correction on a car that plainly does not need it; if your paint is straight, we will say so and the quote will be smaller.

How it works

Inspection first, under lighting that shows the truth, then a written quote. Cars are generally with us one to three days. See the cost guide for what drives the number, the service areas page for nearby suburbs including Richmond, and get in touch when you want a look-over.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

My car is garaged. Do I still need a coating?

Garaging removes UV and rain but not everything. Cars that sit for weeks collect dust that is then wiped off dry, which is one of the fastest ways to swirl a clear coat. Garaged cars also tend to get quick detailer wipe-downs rather than proper washes. A coating makes dry dust release far more easily and reduces the marring that habit causes.

What are the small black specks all over my car under the elms?

Most likely elm leaf beetle frass and aphid honeydew combined with sooty mould, which is common under Stonnington's mature elm and plane avenues. It is organic, acidic when wet, and it bakes on in summer. It comes off easily from a coated surface and stubbornly from bare clear coat, which is the practical argument for coating a car parked under those trees.

Is it worth coating a car I only drive on weekends?

Often yes, but for a different reason than a daily driver. On a weekend car the value is in wash frequency and wash safety rather than in road grime resistance. Fewer contact washes over the coating's life means fewer opportunities to introduce swirls into paint that is otherwise close to perfect, which is the whole point on a car like that.
