Essendon's real constraint
Essendon sits in the City of Moonee Valley, and the local housing stock is largely interwar — Californian bungalows and Edwardian weatherboards on streets like Rose Street and around Keilor Road, most with a single garage set back down a driveway. Those garages were built for cars that were about a metre narrower and half a metre shorter than what people drive now. So the garage holds the tools and the bikes, and the car lives in the driveway or on the nature strip.
That puts most Essendon cars outdoors, which is the same starting point as Doncaster, but the contamination profile is different. Essendon sits alongside the Tullamarine Freeway and CityLink corridor and near Essendon Fields, and cars here carry a noticeably heavier load of road grit and ferrous brake particulate than cars further from the arterials. It settles as a fine, gritty film that feels rough to the fingertips through a plastic bag.
Two other local factors matter. Nature strip watering and garden sprinklers throw mains water onto parked cars, and a car that dries in the sun with droplets on it gets mineral spotting. And the Moonee Ponds Creek corridor supports a lot of birdlife, which does what birdlife does to a car parked under a street tree.
What the right job looks like
The grit problem argues for two things. First, paint correction before coating, because a car that has had abrasive film wiped off it dry for a few years will be swirled. Second, a full exterior ceramic coating, so that in future the grit sits on a hard, slick surface and rinses away instead of keying in.
The freeway kilometres argue for paint protection film on the front end. If you do the Tulla to the airport or into town daily, a full-front film plus a coating over the top is the combination that actually addresses what is happening to your car, rather than the combination that sounds most impressive.

Does a coating help with stone chips from the freeway?
No. This needs to be clear: a ceramic coating is microns thick and a stone off a truck on the Tullamarine carries far more energy than that can absorb. It will not prevent a chip. Paint protection film on the bonnet, bumper and mirrors is the only product that does, and on a freeway commuter it is usually the better spend.
My car lives on the nature strip. Is that a problem for a coating?
Not for the coating itself, but it changes the maintenance. Street-parked cars in Essendon get more bird activity, more sprinkler overspray from nature strip watering, and more contact from passing pedestrians and bins.
