Greater Dandenong is a different kind of dirty
Dandenong sits in the City of Greater Dandenong, and it borders one of the largest industrial precincts in the state. The manufacturing and logistics belt through Dandenong South, the freight rail lines that run through the suburb, and the heavy vehicle traffic on the Princes Highway and EastLink all put something into the air that suburbs like Toorak never deal with: hot ferrous particulate.
It is worth understanding what that does, because it is not ordinary dirt. Metal particles thrown off brake rotors, rail wheels, grinders and cutting operations land on paint while still hot enough to partially embed into the clear coat. Once there, they oxidise, expand, and bloom outward as the orange-brown specks people notice first on white and silver cars. Washing does nothing. You need a chemical iron remover to dissolve them and clay to shear off what remains, and if they have been in place for years they will have pitted the surface.
The second local reality is the vehicle mix. This is a working suburb, and a large share of the cars are dual cab utes and vans that get hosed down rather than washed, carry tools and building materials, and live outside. The paint condition we typically inspect here is heavily contaminated rather than heavily swirled — the opposite of a garaged inner-east car.
The third is the same UV and hail exposure as the rest of Melbourne, with the added detail that parking around the Dandenong Market and the industrial estates is almost entirely open hardstand.
What we do differently here

No overselling
A coating does not stop fallout landing. It does not stop stone chips off the highway, which are a real issue on trucks and utes — that is film territory. It does not stop the scratches that come from sliding a ladder off a tray. And it does not stop hail.

Is a coating worth it on a work ute?
It can be, for different reasons than on a passenger car. A coated tray and tub liner release dirt, mud and concrete splash far more easily, and coated paint survives regular hose-downs better than bare clear coat. What it will not do is resist the abrasion of sliding tools and timber, so a coating is not a substitute for a proper liner or mat.
How often should I decontaminate a car parked in an industrial area?
A full iron and tar decontamination every six to twelve months is reasonable if you park near heavy industry or rail. On a coated car the particles sit on the coating rather than keying into the paint, so decontamination is quicker and safer because you are stripping the coating surface rather than abrading the clear coat underneath it.
